Therapeutic Counselling Services

Evidence-Based Therapy Tailored to your needs

Professional Counselling Support in Ongar, Essex

Life can be overwhelming. Whether you’re struggling with anxiety, processing trauma, navigating a difficult relationship, supporting a child through emotional challenges, or facing addiction, I’m here to help.

I’m Angie Fernandes, a CPCAB Level 5 qualified Cognitive Behavioural Therapist and member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). With extensive training in evidence-based therapeutic approaches and over 15 years of experience, I provide professional, compassionate counselling services to individuals, couples, children, and families throughout Essex.

My approach is tailored to you. I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all therapy. Instead, I draw from my training in CBT, trauma-informed therapy, hypnotherapy, art and play therapy, and person-centred counselling to create a treatment plan that feels right for your unique situation.

The Support You Need, When You Need It

I offer specialist counselling services for a wide range of difficulties. Here’s how I can support you:

Mental Health Support | Children’s Counselling | Couples & Relationship Counselling | Bereavement Counselling | Addiction Counselling | Hypnotherapy & Unconscious Mind Work | Trauma-Informed Therapy

Mental Health Support

Anxiety | Depression | Stress | Panic Attacks | Phobias | Low Self-Esteem

If you’re struggling with your mental health, you’re not alone. Anxiety, depression, and stress can feel overwhelming, affecting every aspect of your life – your work, relationships, sleep, and sense of self.

In our sessions, I’ll help you:

  • Understand your thought processes and how they affect your feelings and behaviours
  • Explore the root causes of your anxiety, depression, or stress
Develop practical coping strategies and stress-reducing techniques
  • Challenge unhelpful thinking patterns using evidence-based CBT approaches
  • Build resilience and confidence to manage your mental health long-term

I use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) as a core approach because it’s proven to be highly effective for anxiety and depression. But I also incorporate other therapeutic techniques based on what works best for you.

Whether you’re experiencing panic attacks, struggling with low mood, feeling constantly stressed, or battling intrusive thoughts, I can help you find a way through.

Children's Counselling

Art Therapy | Play Therapy | Emotional Support for Ages 5-12

Children experience big emotions but often struggle to express them in words. That’s where specialist children’s counselling makes all the difference.

I have extensive experience working with vulnerable children and young people through my years with Place2be, a school-based mental health counselling service. I’ve held school counsellor roles across primary and secondary schools in Essex and the London Borough of Waltham Forest, supporting children aged 5-12 through workshops, therapeutic groups, and individual sessions.

How I Work with Children:

I use art therapy and play therapy because these approaches allow children to express what they’re feeling without having to find the words. Through drawing, painting, storytelling, and play, children can process difficult emotions, work through trauma, and develop healthy coping strategies.

I also work in collaboration with family members to create a safe, supportive environment both in sessions and at home. Where appropriate, I offer parenting guidance to help both child and parent navigate psychological difficulties together.

I Can Help Your Child With:

  • Anxiety and worry
  • Behavioural difficulties
  • Emotional regulation challenges
  • Trauma or difficult life experiences
  • Friendship or school problems
  • Family changes (separation, bereavement, new siblings)
  • Low self-esteem or confidence issues
  • Anger management

My goal is to help your child feel heard, understood, and supported so they can focus on learning, develop positive behaviours, and ultimately live a happier, more fulfilled life.

Couples & Relationship Counselling

Communication | Conflict Resolution | Rebuilding Trust | Moving Forward Together

Relationships can be complicated. Whether you’re facing communication breakdowns, trust issues, infidelity, or simply feeling disconnected from your partner, couples counselling can help.

I offer a non-judgemental, unbiased space where both of you can be heard. I’m not here to take sides – I’m here to help you both understand each other better, identify the conflicts at the heart of your difficulties, and explore what decisions need to be made to move forward.

How Couples Counselling Works

In our sessions together, we’ll explore:

  • How you’re both feeling and what each of you needs
  • Communication patterns that might be causing conflict
  • The underlying issues beneath surface arguments
  • How past experiences affect your relationship now
  • What you both want for the future of your relationship
  • Practical strategies to improve communication and rebuild connection

I Can Help With:

  • Communication difficulties
  • Trust and betrayal
  • Intimacy issues
  • Conflict and arguments
  • Life transitions (parenthood, career changes, retirement)
  • Blended family challenges
  • Deciding whether to stay together or separate

Whether you’re hoping to rebuild your relationship or seeking clarity about whether to part ways, I’ll support you both through this difficult time with compassion and professionalism.

Bereavement Counselling

Grief Support | Loss | Navigating Life After Loss

Losing someone you love is one of the hardest experiences we face. Grief can feel overwhelming, confusing, and isolating – and there’s no “right” way to grieve.

I offer bereavement counselling to help you navigate your grief and develop coping strategies to adjust to life without your loved one.

How I Support You Through Grief:

Grief isn’t just sadness. It’s anger, guilt, numbness, confusion, and so much more. In our sessions, I provide a safe space where you can:

  • Express all your feelings without judgement
  • Talk about your loved one and keep their memory alive
  • Process complicated emotions like guilt or anger
  • Understand the grieving process and what’s “normal”
  • Develop healthy coping strategies
  • Find ways to move forward whilst honouring your loss
  • Adjust to your new reality and identity

I Work With Grief From:

  • Death of a partner, parent, child, or sibling
  • Loss of a friend
  • Anticipatory grief (when someone is terminally ill)
  • Complicated grief or prolonged grief disorder
  • Multiple losses
  • Loss through suicide
  • Miscarriage or pregnancy loss

Grief doesn’t have a timeline, and healing doesn’t mean forgetting. I’m here to walk alongside you through this painful journey, for as long as you need.

Addiction Counselling

Substance Abuse | Behavioural Addictions | Recovery Support

Addiction is a vicious cycle. Your focus may be on that specific addiction all the time, leaving little room for anything else. But underneath every addiction is a cause, a trigger, an unmet need or unhealed wound.

I have specialist training in therapeutic counselling for addictions, and I understand that addiction isn’t a moral failing – it’s a coping mechanism that’s stopped working for you.

How Addiction Counselling Works:

In our sessions, we’ll work together to:

  • Examine the underlying causes and triggers of your addiction
  • Understand what needs your addiction is trying to meet
  • Develop healthier coping strategies to replace addictive behaviours
  • Address co-occurring mental health issues (anxiety, depression, trauma)
  • Build a support network and relapse prevention plan
  • Heal the emotional wounds that fuel your addiction
  • Support you emotionally throughout your recovery journey

I Work With:

  • Alcohol addiction
  • Drug addiction (prescription or recreational)
  • Gambling addiction
  • Sex and pornography addiction
  • Internet and gaming addiction
  • Shopping or spending addiction
  • Food and eating disorders
  • Co-dependency

Recovery is possible, and you don’t have to do it alone. I’ll provide compassionate, non-judgemental support as you work towards freedom from addiction.

Trauma-Informed Therapy

PTSD | Complex Trauma | Childhood Trauma | Emotional Wounds

Trauma affects us deeply – not just psychologically, but physically and emotionally too. Whether you’ve experienced a single traumatic event or ongoing trauma over many years, I can help you process what happened and find a path to healing.

I’m trained in Voyage trauma-informed therapy, which means I understand how trauma impacts the brain and body. I create a safe, compassionate space where you can explore your experiences at your own pace, without judgement or pressure.

What Trauma-Informed Therapy Involves:

Trauma-informed therapy recognises that trauma isn’t just about what happened to you – it’s about how it affected you. In our sessions, I’ll help you:

  • Feel safe and in control of your healing journey
  • Understand your trauma responses (fight, flight, freeze, fawn)
  • Process traumatic memories in a safe, contained way
  • Develop grounding and coping techniques for when you feel triggered
  • Rebuild your sense of safety, trust, and self-worth
  • Move from surviving to thriving

I also integrate body-based approaches when appropriate, because trauma is often stored in the body. This might include breathwork, grounding techniques, or other somatic practices alongside our talking therapy.

I Work With:

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Complex PTSD (C-PTSD)
  • Childhood trauma and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs)
  • Abuse (physical, emotional, sexual)
  • Neglect
  • Grief and loss
  • Accidents or medical trauma
  • Witnessing traumatic events

You don’t have to carry this alone. Healing is possible, and I’m here to support you every step of the way.

Hypnotherapy & Unconscious Mind Work

Accessing Deeper Healing | Breaking Patterns | Releasing Blocks

Sometimes the barriers to our wellbeing lie beneath our conscious awareness. That’s where hypnotherapy and unconscious mind work can be incredibly powerful.

I’m qualified as an Unconscious Mind Therapist including Hypnotherapy, which means I can help you access and work with the deeper parts of your mind that influence your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.

What Hypnotherapy Can Help With:

  • Breaking unwanted habits
  • Overcoming phobias and fears
  • Managing anxiety and stress
  • Improving sleep
  • Building confidence
  • Pain management
  • Processing trauma
  • Releasing limiting belief

Hypnotherapy isn’t about being “put under” or losing control. You’re fully aware and in control throughout. It’s simply a deeply relaxed state where your unconscious mind becomes more receptive to positive suggestions and healing.

I often integrate hypnotherapy with other therapeutic approaches like CBT for enhanced results.

How Counselling Works

Your Journey to Healing

Step 1: Free Discovery Call (20 minutes)

Not sure if counselling is right for you? Let’s have a no-pressure conversation where you can tell me what you’re experiencing, ask questions, and see if we’re a good fit. There’s no commitment required.

Step 2: Initial Consultation (First Session)

Your first full session is about getting to know you and understanding your story. We’ll explore:

  • What’s brought you to counselling
  • What you’re hoping to achieve
  • Your history and background (as much as you’re comfortable sharing)
  • Any previous therapy experiences
  • How we might work together

By the end of this session, we’ll have a clear plan for moving forward.

Step 3: Regular Sessions

Most clients benefit from weekly or fortnightly sessions, though we can adjust the frequency based on your needs and preferences. Each session is typically 50-60 minutes.

In our ongoing work together, we’ll:

  • Explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours
  • Work through difficult emotions and experiences
  • Develop practical coping strategies
  • Challenge unhelpful patterns
  • Build on your strengths
  • Track your progress and adjust our approach as needed

Step 4: Review & Ending

Counselling isn’t forever. As you make progress and develop the tools you need, we’ll work towards ending our sessions. Some clients need just a few sessions, others benefit from longer-term support. We’ll regularly review your progress and discuss when you might be ready to finish.

And if you need support again in the future, I’m always here.

Frequently Asked Questions

What You Might Be Wondering

How long will I need counselling?

This varies for everyone. Some people find relief in 6-8 sessions, whilst others benefit from longer-term support. We’ll regularly review your progress and discuss what feels right for you.

What's the difference between counselling and therapy?

The terms are often used interchangeably. I use both evidence-based therapeutic techniques (like CBT) and person-centred counselling approaches, tailored to what you need.

Will you give me advice?

I’m not here to tell you what to do. Instead, I’ll help you explore your thoughts and feelings, understand yourself better, and make your own informed decisions about your life.

What if I don't know what to talk about?

That’s completely normal, especially in the beginning. I’ll guide the conversation with questions and observations. You don’t need to have everything figured out before we start.

Can I bring someone with me?

For individual counselling, sessions are typically one-to-one. For couples or family therapy, relevant people are included. If you’d like support getting to your first appointment, someone can wait for you in the waiting area.

Do you prescribe medication?

No, I’m a counsellor, not a psychiatrist. However, I can work alongside your GP or psychiatrist if you’re taking medication for mental health conditions.

What if I'm in crisis?

If you’re in immediate danger or experiencing a mental health crisis, please contact your GP, call 999, or reach out to the Samaritans on 116 123. Counselling is most effective when you’re able to engage with the process safely.
